چکیده

We investigate the combined effect of neutron and proton superfluidities on the cooling of neutron stars whose cores consist of nucleons and electrons. We consider singlet-state pairing of protons and triplet-state pairing of neutrons in the cores of neutron stars. The critical superfluid temperatures Tc are assumed to depend on the density of matter. We study two types of neutron pairing with different components of the total angular momentum of Cooper pairs along the quantization axis (|mJ | =0 or 2). Our calculations are compared with observations of thermal emission from isolated neutron stars. We show that the observations can be interpreted by using two classes of superfluidity models: (1) strong proton superfluidity with a maximum critical temperature in the stellar core Tmax c ∼ 4×10 9 K and weak neutron superfluidity of any type (Tmax c ∼ 2 × 10 8 K); (2) strong neutron superfluidity (pairing with |mJ |=0) and weak proton superfluidity. The two types of models reflect an approximate symmetry with respect to an interchange of the critical temperatures of neutron and proton

Cooling of neutron stars: effects of accreted envelopes, magnetic field and crustal superfluidity

We briefly review recent theoretical studies of the effects of accreted envelopes, magnetic fields and crustal superfluidity on the cooling of neutron stars. These effects are especially important for slowly cooling low-mass neutron stars, where direct Urca process of neutrino emission is forbidden. The effects are useful for interpretation of observations of several isolated middle-aged neutro...

Cooling of Neutron Stars: Two Types of Triplet Neutron Pairing

We consider cooling of neutron stars (NSs) with superfluid cores composed of neutrons, protons, and electrons (assuming singlet-state pairing of protons, and triplet-state pairing of neutrons). We mainly focus on (nonstandard) triplet-state pairing of neutrons with the |mJ | = 2 projection of the total angular momentum of Cooper pairs onto quantization axis. The specific feature of this pairing...

Minimal models of cooling neutron stars with accreted envelopes

We study the ‘minimal’ cooling scenario of superfluid neutron stars with nucleon cores, where the direct Urca process is forbidden and enhanced cooling is produced by neutrino emission due to the Cooper pairing of neutrons. Extending our recent previous work, we include the effects of surface accreted envelopes of light elements. We employ the phenomenological density-dependent critical tempera...

Three types of cooling superfluid neutron stars: Theory and observations

Cooling of neutron stars (NSs) with the cores composed of neutrons, protons, and electrons is simulated assuming S0 pairing of neutrons in the NS crust, and also S0 pairing of protons and weak P2 pairing of neutrons in the NS core, and using realistic density profiles of the superfluid critical temperatures Tc(ρ). The theoretical cooling models of isolated middle-aged NSs can be divided into th...

Temperature-dependent pulsations of superfluid neutron stars

We examine radial oscillations of superfluid neutron stars at finite internal temperatures. For this purpose, we generalize the description of relativistic superfluid hydrodynamics to the case of superfluid mixtures. We show that in a neutron star, at hydrostatic and beta-equilibrium, the redshifted temperature gradient is smoothed out by neutron superfluidity (but not by proton superfluidity)....
